Rationale of the Book The contribution of the tourism & travel sector for strengthening and empowerment of communities as pillars of sustainable development has remained a central agenda in the research arena since the last few decades. Tourism is a great social tool reducing inequalities and helping communities to progress. The more positive view towards this is engaging local people in tourism development will help in building stronger and more resilient communities. Community events and festivals can be seen as a way to involve local people, create employment opportunities and bring about socio-economic benefits to the community, particularly in the interior and remote areas and to strive towards balanced and sustainable development and preserve, enrich and promote the region's cultural heritage. Such festivals can have historic, religious, cultural and traditional significance as they are also the integral parts of the community building. Fairs & Festivals and events hold a unique ability to entertain, educate, hold aesthetic value and provide a platform for escapism through the creation of an often unique event experience. The community events and festivals are gradually becoming more popular in the rural areas as a means to give a new lease of life to the local economies. Events and special festivals plays utmost important role in destination development, image making and acting as catalysts for other developments in the area. Many decisive steps have been made to define the nature and extent of community events and festivals related to tourism. The sense of any community and place is always linked to their events and festivals they celebrate. Such events and festivals have grown with the passage of time and helped to showcase the values, interests, and aspirations of local residents of the community and of that place. As a niche form of tourism, community events and festivals can be examined in relation to their social and cultural contexts.
