The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe damages to the global tourism industry. The prospect that the COVID-19 may be lingering longer than expected has imposed an urgent need for the tourism academia to research on effective tourism recovery strategies and practices while the pandemic is still ongoing. Against such a background, China has made significant achievements in containing COVID-19 and mitigating its effects on the tourism and hospitality sectors. The tourism and hospitality sectors in China are generally in an admiring state of recovery.

In this unprecedented time of global pandemic, the practices and measures of the tourism recovery in China may shed light for the tourism development and transformation in the future. An exploration of tourism recovery experiences in China, the factors underlying the recovery, and impacts of the recovery and implications on both the supply and demand sides of the tourism system may produce the explicit knowledge needed by the global tourism industry. Therefore, we propose this special issue in the Journal of China Tourism Research (JCTR) focussing on China’s tourism recovery experiences in the pandemic, the factors contributing to the recovery and the implications on various aspects of the industry.

JCTR publishes the latest research on tourism that relates to China and its citizens and encourages interdisciplinary scholarship and commentaries. It provides a rich forum for exchange of fresh information and ideas among academics and practitioners; fosters and enhances cutting-edge research activities that advance tourism knowledge; and discusses the relevance of tourism to the Chinese society. JCTR is an affiliated journal to the International Association for China Tourism Studies (IACTS).

Researchers are invited to submit papers in various topics around China’s tourism recovery in the COVID-19 pandemic, covering strategies, methods, measures, experiences, and implications in tourism and related sectors. Indicative topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Recovery strategies, actions, and measures in tourism sectors (e.g., accommodation, Food & Beverage, transport)
